A Gem of a Police Procedural for Patient and Discerning Viewers.
I have liked all four of the Atkinson Maigret films, but this is not only my favorite, but also the best police procedural I have seen in a long time. I liked Atkinson's mature and restrained portrayal of Maigret, and I appreciated how Maigret's wife gets involved in the case. So many police and detective shows add drama (or melodrama) by having marital problems relating to the lead character's single-minded dedication to the job. It is a pleasant change to have a marriage as caring and successful as this one. Also, Maigret's relationship with his team and the inspector from another jurisdiction is handled well. At the outset, it was cool when his sergeant, I believe it was, correctly predicted that Maigret was hooked by the case and would take it on. Yes, he knows his boss.
There is action to be had here on top of the police work.
Finally, there is a scene where Maigret talks to his suspect about the victim who the bad guy calls a nobody. Maigret's response is the best line from a movie I have seen in a long time
